Saturday, December 28, 2002 Darrell Lea Cafe Latte Chocolates [link] We have Flibble to thank for these chocolates, which were a Christmas present. Thanks, Flibble! XD Not much to say about these delightful little things... they're made up of nougat, a layer of coffee-ish milk chocolate then a layer of white chocolate around the outside. They go great with an apres-housework cup of coffee too, speaking from experience. :3

This hasn't got much to do with anything, except that I found out some cool stuff about food in the Heian period while I was doing research at work for Ojarumaru toys. XD Ah, food. Where would we be without it? Anyway, I digress. J-List and Maruwa (US orders only, dangit) both carry this candy, but I was fortunate enough to find it at an Asian grocery in the shopping mall right near me. The packaging is cutely Japanese retro, and as the wrapper says it's designed to evoke that natsukashii (nostalgic) feeling. Nostalgia aside (all I can associate it with is tamarind), they take some getting used to but are quite addictive as a couch munchie. They're very sour and a bit sweet at the same time, which you'll like if you enjoyed stuff like Lemon Warheads or sour gummies in general. I just wish I could find some actual umeboshi to put in my rice balls...

Straits Gourmet Cuisine I've been to this lovely little Singapore/Malaysian restaurant a few times in the past, but this is the first time I've visited its brand new premises. They didn't move far, but the change is quite dramatic - it used to feel like a little takeaway shop, but now it really feels like a restaurant. There are still cute little kitschy touches to it, though, like the sensor-bird singing when you walk in or the bamboo with Christmas ornaments strung between it running along one wall. It was an extremely hot day today, so I simply went for the mango sticky rice. The serving's a little on the small side, but the combination of warm sweet rice, fresh mango and cream really hits the spot.
